We had a fantastic opportunity to interview the superb Adam Smith about Para (www.usepara.com) and how they’ve utilized Golem.
Q: Do you mind sharing your name, title, and what you do for Para?
Adam: My name is Adam Smith. I’m a founding engineer at Para, and I do all-things Engineering.
Q: Could you share a little bit about what Para is?
Adam: Para is a voice-marketing platform focusing on personalization at scale.
Q: When you first came across Golem and considered it for Para, what type of solution were you looking for?
Adam: Actually, I wasn’t even looking for a solution. One of our engineers brought up the idea of Durable Computing and linked to a Golem article. That is how I learned about Durable Computing and became my first steps into it.
Q: After you came across the article about durable computing, what was your decision process in giving Golem a try?
Adam: It was a foreign concept at first, but we eventually realized how powerful Durable Computing could be to just simplify your code and make everything much more reliable, so you can sleep at night.
Q: What are some of your overall thoughts about Durable Computing?
Adam: It’s really all about the reliability for me.
Q: What dramatic changes would we see if everyone were to adopt solutions in durable computing?
Adam: I think most of the time we’re writing code to prevent failures, so most of the work we’re doing is focused on writing the code needed to prevent the bad things that could happen in traditional infrastructure. When you take all of that away, you can just focus on your application logic and not worry about all of that. It’s amazing.
Q: What advice would you give to another company looking to adopt Golem for their backend development?
Adam: I would say to definitely give it a try, see if it’s right for you. I think that with the state of WASM right now, it’s a bit early in the game. As it matures a little bit more, everyone will be using this.
Q: How would you say Golem differs from other durable computing solutions that you may have looked at?
Adam: The use of WASM is very innovative and very low latency and very scalable.
Q: What was your experience working with the Golem team?
Adam: They’re incredible. Everyone’s very knowledgeable. Very helpful. Willing to go the extra mile. We loved working with Golem.
Q: What is a top feature you would like to see in a future update of Golem?
Adam: It would be really cool to see how the UI matures, just to have more full features and user interface. Also, first-class support for database drivers would be great.
